  1. Chicago was awarded the 1904 Summer Olympic Games but the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided in 1902 to transfer the Games to St. Louis. Back
  2. Baron Pierre de Coubertin made arrangements with the Greek government to host Interim Olympic Games. This marked the 10th Anniversary of the Olympic Revival. The IOC does not recognize these Games as official, since the Games were not held in compliance with the normal four-year cycle. Back
  3. Rome, Italy was awarded the 1908 Summer Olympic Games. After the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the funds for these Games was diverted for reconstruction of Naples. As a result, the IOC awarded the Games to London on April 7, 1906. Back
  4. The 1976 Winter Olympic Games were originally awarded to Denver, USA. Denver withdrew in 1974 after a City referendum. The Games were then awarded to Innsbruck, Austria. Back
  5. The IOC decided to alternate the Winter and Summer Olympic Games biannually. The change was made due to financial constraints (sports, funding, and management of multiple Olympic Host and Bid Cites) in planning such large events. Back
